Sustainability and the Packaging Sector
With the increase in global warming and environmental awareness, all regulations, especially the EU (European Union) Green Deal, force brands to use "Eco-friendly" packaging.
However, when a food manufacturer switches from traditional multi-layer plastic film to 100% recyclable (Monomaterial), compostable (Paper-based), or PLA (Polylactic Acid) films, the packaging machines in the factory may experience problems with these new films.
Challenges Created by New Generation Films in Machines
The heat tolerance range (sealing window) of traditional plastics is wide. For example, the Sealing Jaw easily seals any type of nylon between 140°C and 160°C.
However, the situation is different for Recyclable (Mono-PE etc.) and Paper-Based films:
- Narrow Heat Range: They only seal between 125°C and 128°C. They melt and stick to the jaw at 130°C, and do not seal and let air in at 120°C.
- Low Tension Tolerance: Paper-based packaging is not elastic. If the wrong tension setting is applied during pulling, the paper tears instantly (web break).
Solutions to Prepare Machines for Sustainable Packaging
As Dr Mach, we apply the following modifications to our existing and new machines for sustainable films:
- Ultra Precise PID Heat Control: We use special thermocouples and software that limit the temperature fluctuation in the heating jaws to ±1°C.
- Teflon or Special Ceramic Coated Jaws: To prevent the melting eco-films from sticking to the jaw, we equip the sealing jaws with non-stick coatings used in the aviation industry.
- Servo Assisted Web Tension: While the bobbin is unwinding, Load Cells read the tension in milliseconds, and via servo brakes, they provide pulling at the optimum softness to prevent the paper from tearing.
