What is OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness)?
The biggest problem in production lines is not knowing how efficiently the machines "actually" work. The factory owner thinks the machine has worked for 8 hours, but due to micro-stops, speed drops, and waste, the machine has actually only produced 4 hours of value.
The OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) metric is used to find these hidden losses. In smart (Industry 4.0) packaging lines, OEE is the gold standard of performance.
3 Core Components of OEE
The OEE calculation consists of multiplying three factors: Availability x Performance x Quality
- Availability: How long the machine works during the planned production time.
- Performance: How close the machine gets to its theoretical maximum speed while running.
- Quality: How many of the produced packages come out sound (without waste).
OEE Formula: Availability (%) × Performance (%) × Quality (%) = OEE (%)
What Should Be the World-Class OEE Target?
- 100% OEE: Perfect Production (Zero downtime, zero defects, maximum speed - Theoretical only).
- 85% OEE: World Class. It is the target of ambitious manufacturers.
- 60% OEE: Average. It means there is still a great potential to be improved.
- 40% OEE: Low. There is serious waste and hidden costs (downtime) in production.
