Foreign Material Detection in Food Safety: X-Ray and Metal Detectors

Foreign Material Detection in Food Safety: X-Ray and Metal Detectors

Foreign Body Risk in Production (Foreign Body Contamination)

Finding a bolt inside a biscuit packet or a glass shard in baby food is the biggest nightmare for a food manufacturer. Such a situation not only leads to massive product recall costs but also destroys brand prestige built over years overnight.

Export standards (BRC, IFS, HACCP) mandate the installation of Inspection devices at the end of production lines to monitor the contents of the packages. The two most popular technologies are Metal Detectors and X-Ray systems.

1. Metal Detectors

The oldest and most common safety standard.

  • Working Principle: An electromagnetic field passes through the machine. If there is Ferrous, Non-ferrous metals (Aluminum, Brass, etc.), or Stainless Steel (SS316, etc.) inside the product, the balance of the electromagnetic field is disrupted, triggering an alarm and ejecting the package from the line.
  • Strengths: Incredibly sensitive in detecting metals (can detect spheres under 1mm). Cost and maintenance are low.
  • Weaknesses (Blind Spots): It only sees metal! It CANNOT DETECT plastic, bone, wood, stone, or glass shards. Additionally, if your packaging is Aluminum Foil (e.g., a chocolate wrapper), the metal detector cannot function because it perceives the foil itself as an error.

2. X-Ray Inspection Systems

The pinnacle of technology in food safety. It operates on the same principle as hospital X-ray machines.

  • Working Principle: As X-rays pass through the package, they create a map based on the "Density" of the objects inside. Water or food has low density; however, stone, glass, bone, or high-density plastics appear as a black shadow (Alert) on the X-ray screen.
  • Strengths: It captures not just metal, but glass shards, stones, calcified bones (in poultry/meat lines), ceramics, and high-density rubbers. It can easily read through aluminum foil packaging.
  • Extra Features: X-Ray systems can simultaneously detect a "Missing Product" inside a box. For example, if there are 11 pieces in a 12-piece chocolate box, it recognizes the deficiency from the image without weighing the box and rejects it.

What Happens When a Foreign Body is Found? (Reject Systems)

When an inspection machine detects an error, it NEVER stops the production conveyor (to maintain efficiency). Instead, the defective package is ejected into a reject bin within seconds using a Piston Pusher, Air-blast, or Drop-belt.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Does the X-Ray device emit radiation to operators? A: Absolutely not. Industrial X-Ray devices are fully insulated with thick lead shielding and tunnel curtains. The radiation received by an operator standing next to it is lower than the natural radiation received while walking in the sun. (It also does not damage the DNA or structure of the food).

Dr Mach ensures your BRC certification by seamlessly integrating X-Ray and Metal detector systems from global giants like Mettler-Toledo and Ishida in end-of-line automation projects.
