Industrial Packaging in the Food Sector: ISO 22000 and Hygiene Standards

Industrial Packaging in the Food Sector: ISO 22000 and Hygiene Standards

Why are Hygiene Standards Critical in Food Packaging?

In the food industry, industrial packaging is the most critical stage directly affecting the product's shelf life and consumer health. To prevent bacterial growth, avoid oxidation, and maintain product integrity, it is mandatory for machines to comply with specific international standards (ISO 22000 and GMP).

What is ISO 22000? Why is it Necessary?

ISO 22000 is the Food Safety Management System standard. It covers all processes within the food chain. During the packaging stage, the following criteria are paramount:

  • Use of Stainless Steel: All surfaces of the machines that come into contact with food must be manufactured from grade 304 or 316L stainless steel.
  • Ease of Cleanability (CIP/SIP): Machines should be tool-less for easy assembly/disassembly and designed for washdown.
  • Sealing Technology: Oxygen levels inside the package should be minimized using Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP).

Advanced Technologies Used in Food Packaging

Modern packaging lines utilize the following technologies to maximize food safety:

  1. Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP): Oxygen is removed from the package and replaced with nitrogen. This halts bacterial growth and extends the shelf life by up to 3 times.
  2. X-Ray and Metal Detectors: Integrated into the line immediately before or after packaging, these detectors autonomously detect foreign bodies (metal, plastic, glass) that may have entered the product and remove them from the line.
  3. Servo Motor Driven Precision: This minimizes the risk of cross-contamination by preventing spills and splashes during the filling process.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the difference between 304 and 316 grade steel in food packaging machines? A: While grade 304 is sufficient for general foods (dry foods, bakery products), grade 316L stainless steel is essential to prevent corrosion in products that are acidic (tomato paste, lemon juice) or have high salt content.

Q: Is GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certification mandatory for machines? A: For facilities aiming to export or supply global supermarket chains, using machines produced according to GMP norms is practically a necessity.

All industrial packaging and filling systems we produce at Dr Mach are 100% compliant with ISO 22000 and GMP standards and are manufactured using 316L stainless steel to ensure high sanitation. You can contact our engineers to modernize your production line.
