How to Choose the Right Filling Machine: A Buyer's Guide

How to Choose the Right Filling Machine: A Buyer's Guide

Why Is Filling Machine Selection So Critical?

The majority of bottlenecks on a production line originate at the filling station. The wrong filling machine means lost production, product waste and regulatory non-compliance. This guide summarises the technical criteria to help you choose the right filling machine.

Selecting Machine Type Based on Product Characteristics

Technology Selection by Viscosity

Product TypeViscosity RangeRecommended Technology
Water, serum, beverages1–10 cPGravity / overflow
Shampoo, lotion100–5,000 cPPiston filling
Gel, paste, yoghurt5,000–50,000 cPPiston or auger filling
Powder, granules—Auger or volumetric

Filling Accuracy Requirements

  • ±0.5%: Standard food products
  • ±0.1%: Cosmetics and cleaning products
  • ±1 mg (absolute): Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products

For high-accuracy applications, gravimetric control (inline weighing) is essential.

Capacity Calculation: Don't Over-Specify

Define your annual production target, then convert to daily and hourly capacity:

Required capacity (units/hour) =
Annual target ÷ (working days × daily shift hours × efficiency factor)

The efficiency factor is typically 0.75–0.85. Select machine capacity at 20% above this figure, because format changes, cleaning and maintenance reduce total available capacity.

Container and Format Flexibility

If you will be working with different volumes or bottle geometries, ask these questions:

  • How long does a format change take? (Target: <30 minutes)
  • Are changeover parts standard or custom-made?
  • Is fully automatic format change (servo-controlled) available?

CIP/SIP and Hygienic Design

In food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic production, hygienic design compliant with EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group) standards is mandatory. Checklist:

  • All wetted parts in 316L stainless steel
  • Surface roughness Ra ≤0.8 µm
  • Dead-leg-free pipe geometry
  • Automatic CIP programme

TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) Analysis

Purchase price alone is meaningless. Factor in the following:

  1. Spare parts cost: Approx. 3–5% of machine value per year
  2. Energy consumption: Servo systems deliver 30–40% energy savings
  3. Downtime cost: Every hour of downtime = missed production
  4. Training and technical support: Local service network is critical
